The IRS has significantly expanded its online Business Tax Account, opening secure digital access to a much wider range of entities, including partnerships, federal, state and local governments, Indian tribal governments, and tax‑exempt organizations in early April 2026. These organizations (plus some others which already were granted access) can now use the platform to view tax balances, make payments, review payment history, download select digital notices, view eligible transcripts (such as payroll and income), request a tax compliance check, and verify the business name and address on file with the IRS.

The entities that can access the Business Tax Account include:

  • Sole proprietors (with an EIN on file with the IRS).
  • S corporations.
  • C corporations.
  • Partnerships.
  • Government entities (federal, state, and local governments).
  • Indian tribal governments.
  • Tax‑exempt organizations.

Additionally, you can authorize your tax professionals (CPA, EA, Lawyer, etc.) to access your business data.

How access works for CPAs/EAs

  • The Business Tax Account is owned by the business, and full control sits with a Designated Official (officer, managing member, or similar) or a sole proprietor with proper authority.
  • That Designated Official can add a Designated User by going to Profile → Manage Access → Add User and entering the individual’s name and SSN/ITIN, then selecting forms, periods, and permissions.
  • A Designated User can be any individual (including a CPA or EA) with an SSN/ITIN who is authorized by the business; they do not need to be an owner, officer, or employee.
  • Designated Users can view balances, make payments, and perform other tasks for the periods and forms granted, but they cannot manage access or authorize others.

By moving more interactions online, affected entities and their designated officials gain faster, more convenient ways to manage their federal tax responsibilities without relying solely on paper correspondence or phone calls.
